Your destination, The High Atlas Mountains, are a mountain range across a Northern stretch of Africa. They extend about 2,500 km (1,500 miles) through Morocco. The highest peak is the Toubkal Mountain, with an elevation of 4,167 m (13,671 ft) in southwestern Morocco.
At 4,167m, Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa. The hike to the summit is challenging, but requires no mountaineering experience and the panoramic view from the summit makes the hard work worthwhile.
With the start of the trek just a couple of hours drive from Marrakech, you can reach the summit and back within 2 days and still have plenty of time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakech. Toubkal has become a magnet for trekkers heading to the Atlas Mountains.
The Jebel Toubkal Trek is typically done in two days. The first day begins with the relatively easy walk from Imlil along the Mizane Valley towards Aremd Village and the Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, followed by the tougher push up to the Toubkal Refuge, making around five hours walking in all.
Most trekkers then aim to start early the following morning for the 3 hour scramble up to the summit (the trail at this point is a rocky scree covered path). At the summit, the views are incredible taking in most of the Atlas Mountains and on a clear day, the Sahara. The descent back down to Imlil takes around five hours.

Where is Mount Toubkal?
Mount Toubkal sits in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, about 90 minutes south of Marrakech. Most treks begin from the village of Imlil.
How high is Mount Toubkal?
Toubkal stands at 4,167m, making it the highest peak in North Africa.
How difficult is the Toubkal trek?
The trek is non-technical in summer but physically challenging due to steep ascents and altitude. In winter, ice axes and crampons may be required.
How long does the trek take?
Toubkal can be climbed in 2 days, but your itinerary spreads it over 4–5 days to allow proper acclimatisation and a safer summit.
What is the accommodation like?
In Imlil, trekkers stay in mountain lodges or guesthouses. At Base Camp, you’ll stay in the Refuge du Toubkal, which has simple dorm-style accommodation.
Do I need previous trekking experience?
You don’t need technical climbing skills, but you should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day on steep, rocky trails.
What gear do I need?
Hiking boots, warm layers, waterproofs, gloves, hat, sunglasses, walking poles, and a 30–35L daypack. A full gear list can be provided.
What weather should I expect?
Conditions vary by season—from warm days in summer to snow and sub-zero temperatures in winter. A weather day is built into your itinerary for flexibility.
How cold is it on summit day?
Temperatures can drop between –5°C and –15°C before wind chill.
What about altitude sickness?
Altitude affects everyone differently. Your itinerary includes an acclimatisation day. Stay hydrated, walk slowly, and listen to the guides.
Are guides mandatory?
Yes. Toubkal sits inside a national park and certified guides are required. We work with experienced local guides and muleteers.
What food is provided on the trek?
Expect hearty Moroccan meals such as tajine, couscous, salads, soups, bread, and tea. Dietary needs can be accommodated with notice.
What is the best time to climb Toubkal?
Ideal seasons include April–June and September–November. Winter offers a more technical, snowy ascent for experienced trekkers.
Is Morocco safe for travellers?
Yes. Imlil and the Toubkal National Park are very safe, welcoming, and well-used by international trekkers.
Are extensions available?
Yes. Optional add-ons include sunrise hot air ballooning, Sahara desert safaris, extra Marrakech nights, hammam spa visits, and guided Medina tours.
Do I need a visa?
Irish and UK passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry.
Can I charge devices at Base Camp?
Yes, though power is limited. A power bank is recommended.
What is summit day like?
Expect an early start (often 3–5 AM), a steep ascent, and a rewarding panoramic view. Total hiking time is typically 8–10 hours.
Are mules used?
Yes. Mules carry group equipment to Base Camp. You only carry your own daypack.
What insurance do I need?
You’ll need travel insurance that covers trekking up to 4,200m.
